Daniel Skolfield

Episode 1 (Click to listen to the episode)

On this very first episode, I share with you a conversation featuring Daniel Skolfield, Creative Director at Lodge Cast Iron. I think Daniel was the first person to ever professionally critique my portfolio and definitely my first design mentor. Over the years we’ve become really good friends who normally would be catching up over cocktails every few weeks. (Pandemics, ammirite?!)

During our virtual conversation we chat about how his childhood peers, like Tad and Garrett, shaped his interests growing up, the importance of personal creative projects, and the mind shift of creativity from his college days to his present day. And last but not least, we dive into his show & tell that discuss what it’s like to be an adult child.

So first up, we jump right into his first creative memory.

Check out this little Brontosaurus dinosaur relief that he painted with his grandma!

The horror movie inspired comic books he created in 5th grade-8th grade.

Archibaud & Shishmac and Savage Deat(h)s.

And for those of you who weren’t familiar with the Spawn Comic book (by Todd McFarlane) here’s a cover from one of those that was popular at the time of his comic book creating days.

We move on to how he got into graphic design and reflecting back on how different he was in 5th grade compared to his son who just graduated 5th grade this year. He notes that Frankie isn’t that much into drawing like he was at the same age. But he did draw this self-portrait recently!

And now for the Show & Tell part of the conversation and also what Daniel does in his spare time to be creative in a different way from his day to day.

This is the specific Lego cactus he sent me.

Here are the various others he’s created over the last handful of years. I’ve seen these in person and every time I’m amazed at what he can do with Legos. I mean look at the dirt details in this pot, or the needles on some of these.

And here’s a single example of a building that lives in the bigger Lego land. Again with the details. I’m so intrigued that something I always viewed as a toy is actually a really cool sculpture.

We wrap up with a few quick questions and we spent some considerable time discussing tv series and why they’re better than movies for continued narratives. But what I didn’t realize was what Nip/Tuck was. So I’ve got some tv watching to do!
